چکیده

We have modeled and numerically simulated the performance of a dielectric-loaded graphene surface-plasmon-polariton (DL-GSPP) waveguide as a biochemical sensing device. In our device, the conventionally used gold layer is replaced with a graphene microribbon for the detection of biochemical molecules. The graphene layer is incorporated to minimize ohmic losses and to enhance the adsorption of biomolecules so that the sensor sensitivity is increased significantly. The sensor performance is quantified through numerical simulations carried out by varying device parameters such as waveguide length, effective mode index, dimension of the dielectric ridge, and the length and the number of graphene layers. One of the prominent features of our DL-GSPP waveguide sensor is that its length is in the millimeter range, an essential requirement for realistic plasmonic waveguide sensors. The average sensitivity of DL-GSPP structure is found to be in the range of 3–6 lRIU (refractive index units), which is comparable to the values obtained using surfaceplasmon resonance (1–10 lRIU) and long-range waveguide sensors (0.1–5 lRIU). Loss compensation in long-range dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides.

Loss compensation in long-range dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides is theoretically analyzed when rare-earth-doped double tungstate crystalline material is used as the gain medium in three different waveguide configurations. We study the effect of waveguide geometry on loss compensation at the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm, and demonstrate that a material gain as small as 12...

Refractive index dependence of the coupling characteristics between long-range surface-plasmon-polariton and dielectric waveguide modes.

The coupling characteristics of a hybrid coupler comprised of a long-range surface-plasmon-polariton (LRSPP) waveguide and a dielectric waveguide is analyzed with different detecting layers. Calculation results show that the coupling strength between the LRSPP mode and the dielectric-waveguide mode is rather sensitive to the refractive index of the detecting layer. This is promising to realize ...

Performance of thermo-optic components based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides

Theoretical analysis of thermo-optic (TO) modulation with dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (DLSPPW) components at telecom wavelength of 1.55 mm is presented with simulations performed using the finite-element method (FEM). The investigated DLSPPW configuration consists of a 1 mm-thick and 1 mm-wide polymer ridge placed on a 50 nm-thin gold stripe and supported by a buffer l...
